Each door of this lacquered 19th-century coffer is beautifully hand-painted with an assortment of auspicious objects. Set amidst censers, scrolls, books, and charms are vase forms containing floral bouquets representing the four seasons. Lotus flowers for summer, chrysanthemums for autumn, plum blossoms for winter, and peonies for spring. Over the centuries of loving use, these painted decorations have taken on a delicate and ephemeral quality, contrasting nicely with the linear frame of the chest. We love this storied cabinet as a way to add rich texture to modern interiors as a buffet or sideboard.
