This early 20th century bookcase once stood as the centerpiece of a Qing-dynasty scholars' studio. Considered a status symbol, books were given pride of place on impressive shelves such as this, stacked alongside precious objects and works of art.

Constructed with clean lines and open sides, this tall bookcase is unique for its four central compartments sectioned off by spindleback sides made of vertical rods. Darkened with a black-brown finish, the timeless shelf has modern appeal and holds its own in a contemporary office or living room.
