Studded with brass nails and textured by richly worn black lacquer, this spectacular trunk dates to the late Ming dynasty and would have been used by a wealthy family or merchant to transport money or precious goods. The subdued, neutral exterior belies the brilliant cinnabar red lacquer within, a finish that would have complemented the splendor of the valuable contents the chest once stored. The original brass hardware adds simple decoration, each cloaked in a dark patina from centuries of use. A truly beautiful example of Ming-dynasty design, this grand traveling trunk lives on as a storied coffee table or blanket chest.
