Carved from a solid block of limestone, this early 20th-century drum stool began its life in China's Shanxi province. A variation of the traditional melon form, the stool has angular ridges running down the sides in a zig-zag pattern. The smoothed top is trimmed by a border of auspicious ruyi, symbols of longevity and good fortune. Traditionally used as a place to rest one’s feet, a stool like this may have originally been nestled among the greenery of a traditional Chinese garden. We also enjoy it as a small side table indoors or out.
