During the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes.

This pair of porcelain garden stools celebrate the famille rose style with a beautiful pastel palette of purples, blues, and greens. Each stool is decorated with joyous scenes of a pair of regal phoenixes perched upon a scholars' rock surrounded by peony blossoms. In combination with peonies, symbols of love and tender affection, the two phoenixes are understood to represent a pair of inseparable lovers. Designed in the classic studded barrel drum form, both stools are bordered by colorful bands of flowers and meanders and feature cutouts in the shape of interlocking coins, a symbol of wealth and prosperity. A beautiful example of famille rose, these stools add rich pattern and color to their surroundings and can be used as seats or side tables indoors or out.
