Designed to resemble the low tables placed atop a kang platform, this 19th-century low bench from Henan province is actually a step used for easily getting in and out of a raised daybed. Constructed of richly aged northern elmwood (yumu), the elongated step has a solid top set upon a waisted apron and simple horsehoof feet. We love this step as a low bench in an entryway or as a footstool beside a tall bed.
