This elegant Chinese bench dates to the early 20th century and was constructed of northern elmwood (yumu) using mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques. The bench has a narrow seat raised by splayed legs and is decorated by finely beaded edges, spiral-form spandrels, and a shallow apron carved to resemble a furled scroll. Originating as shared seating in public gathering spaces, simple benches such as this would have been placed throughout the home, used as casual seating indoors and out.
