Pair of Lattice Top Footrests

Dated to the late 19th century, these rectangular footrests were used in front of a daybed or pair of chairs to elevate one's feet off of cool, damp floors. Although traditional Chinese chairs commonly feature a footrest stretcher for the same purpose, an additional footstool differentiated the user as a distinguished member of the group. This custom can be traced to early Buddhist statuary, wherein seated deities are shown with their feet resting upon lotus pods. Crafted of northern elm (yumu) using mortise-and-tenon joinery, this pair is simply designed with square corners, latticed tops, and horsehoof feet.
