Famille Rose Garden Stool

During the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes.

This spectacular porcelain garden stool is a true celebration of the famille rose style. Dated to the early 20th century, the stool follows the traditional studded drum shape and is intricately decorated in a pastel palette of blues, greens, yellows, and delicate pinks. The sides are adorned with Gu form vases filled with lotus blossoms, flanked by eternal coin tassels and topped by a pink and blue cicada, a symbol of happiness, virtue, and eternal youth. Between these floral arrangements are pairs of interlocking coins, an emblem of prosperity used to attract wealth. A beautiful example of famille rose, this stool adds rich pattern and color to its surroundings and can be used as a seat or side table indoors or out.
