This recessed-leg table from China's Shanxi province dates to the early 19th century and was originally used to display an ancestral shrine in a provincial household. Incense, candles, and fruits would have covered the narrow table as offerings to the family's ancestors. Crafted of northern elm with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the narrow table features a floating-panel top and four round legs linked by straight stretchers. Curvilinear spandrels top each leg, outlined by a beaded edge that flows into the shallow apron.
