Perfecting line and proportion, the simple design of this low square corner cabinet celebrates the restraint of classic Chinese furniture forms. Dated to the mid-19th century, the chest is crafted of elmwood and cloaked in layer upon layer of black lacquer. Traces of the original ornate gilt decoration adorns the cabinet front, including two sinuous dragons on the doors, symbols of power and strength. Designed for general storage in the Qing-dynasty home, this chest is perfect as a side table or nightstand, filled with a collection of contemporary art books or antique tomes.
