Pair of Banker's Chests

This adorable pair of low square chests were designed to be used as portable safes, used to store and secure money and other valuables for a Qing-dynasty merchant or household. The chests open two ways - the front opens by two doors secured by a dagger-and-post hardware, and the top opens by a hinged panel secured by a round lock etched with a floral design. This round lock doubles as a coin slot, used to easily add money to the chest without opening it. Minimally decorated, the chests borrow design elements from the waisted square stool, featuring a waisted top, straight square legs, and hoofed feet. Their compact design and small scale make these banker's chests a charming addition to the home as low nightstands or side tables.
