More portable than chairs, stools were a versatile seating option for Qing-dynasty scholars, nobles, and peasants alike. This provincial stool dates to the turn of the century and would have been used throughout a courtyard home as versatile everyday seating. Crafted of pine using mortise-and-tenon joinery, the tapered stool has a rectangular seat supported by four splayed legs linked with straight stretcher bars. A simple floral carving decorates the apron and traces of the original lacquer finish darken the legs, now faded from years of use.
