This low stone pedestal is an early 19th-century mill stone or roller stone, used for threshing grain on a farm in China's Shanxi province. The heavy stone would have been would have been pulled across a grain harvest, by man or ox, to separate the grain from the straw and chaff. Hand-carved of solid limestone, the cylindrical column has strong presence indoors or out as a minimalist side table, plant stand, or sculpture.
