Designing the intricate patterning of these 19th-century panels was like solving a puzzle. Skilled craftsmen pieced together hand cut lengths of wood, precisely interlocking them to create a repeating diamond pattern. Linear yet open, the pattern was designed to let light and air into a room while maintaining privacy. Aristocratic homes in provincial China often had spacious, neutral interiors, making screens useful and flexible in defining living spaces.
