This unusual lidded jar exemplifies the timeless rustic appeal of provincial Chinese pottery. Dated to the late 19th century, the jar has a tapered form and warm green glaze that recalls ancient funerary jars, used for storing food offerings for passage to the afterlife. The jar exterior is decorated with petal-like lappets marked by round lotus medallions in low relief. Ginkgo leaves fill in the gaps - symbols of hope and peace. Contrasted by an unglazed base, the jar is finished with a thin green glaze that drips down the textured sides beautifully.
