Celadon Temple Jar

This green glazed jar is designed in the style of ancient Chinese ceremonial vessels found in temples or tombs. Often elaborately decorated with miniature figures and relief patterns, such vessels were used for storing food offerings to the gods or an ancestor. This lidded jar has the basic form of a baluster jar or hu vase, a curving shape defined by a wide, rounded body with a narrow neck and a tapered base. The jar is minimally decorated, simply patterned with bands of ruffles and stamped vertical grooves. A lovely, pale celadon glaze cloaks the exterior, pooling in the wave-like trims and sheeting across the rounded shoulders with subtle irregularity.
