This 19th-century lacquered chest was originally used by a Chinese pharmacy to organize and store herbal medicines. A statement piece brilliantly constructed with mortise and tenon joinery, it has forty-five drawers, each fitted with three individual compartments. Paper labels designating the former contents of each drawer provide graphic rhythm to the chest's front, contrasting against the richly aged red lacquer finish.
