Hand-painted atop black lacquer, the colorful scenes decorating the front of this 19th-century coffer depict courtly figures strolling through a traditional Ming-dynasty garden. Such gardens were cultivated to achieve balance between the four elements, and were enjoyed by the scholarly elite as places of quiet contemplation and literary inspiration. After centuries of loving use, these painted decorations have taken on a delicate and ephemeral quality, contrasting nicely with the linear frame of the chest. Fitted with interior shelves and two drawers, this storied cabinet is an excellent storage solution for any interior.
