A classic piece of Chinese furniture, large, upright cabinets such as this were used in traditional homes in lieu of built-in closets, filled with clothing, bedding, and other household goods. Dated to the 19th century, this example is crafted in the style of sloping-stile cabinets, with a slightly A-frame silhouette and an overhung top. The central vertical stile is removable, allowing for easy access to the interior shelves. The cabinet exterior is brushed with bright, cinnabar-red lacquer for a warm crimson finish, contrasted by a dark brown stain on the back and interior. The bottom apron is carved with floral scrollwork and a ripe pomegranate, a symbol of longevity, abundance, and many sons.

Interior shelf is replacement. Minor losses to apron carvings.
