During winter in the colder provinces of China, life revolved around the kang, a heated brick platform that household members would sit or recline upon. Placed on top of the kang, low tables provided a convenient surface for dining, drinking tea, or playing games. This 19th-century kang table follows the classic form, featuring a waisted apron, a rectangular floating-panel top, and short legs linked by straight stretchers. Darkened by a weathered finish from decades of use, this table fits in to modern interiors as a low coffee table or display stand.
