Providing a glimpse into Chinese life more than 100 years ago, this vintage photograph depicts a well-to-do family in a graciously appointed room. The print is rich with clues about the era’s styles and conventions, including the mother’s bound feet. Photography was introduced to China in the mid 19th century, capturing a way of life that would largely disappear when the Qing dynasty fell from power around 1900, shortly after this image was taken.
