Stone Well Head

Hand-carved from a solid block of limestone, this early 20th century stone sculpture was originally used as a well surround in China’s Shanxi province. Provincial water wells were found in courtyards and public squares and used as a source of clean drinking water. Stone well heads such as this were used to narrow the opening for safety and to help keep the water source clean.

Hand-worked with simple tools, the stone slab has a sculptural form, chiseled to a square shape with a round hole through the center. One of the four essential elements of a balanced garden, stone sculptures such as this anchor their surroundings with irregular texture and mottled coloring. The well head’s timeless form elegantly frames views, creating a unique focal point wherever its placed.
