A thin dark glaze clings to the gentle swell of this 19th-century jar, exhibiting a rich range of tonal color. The wide-mouth jar was once used to store food or condiments in a Qing-dynasty kitchen, as evidenced by its interior glaze. Stopping short of the base, the irregular glaze spills across the jar like a waterfall, revealing shades of brown and black as it spreads across the sides. Little details add to the jar's fantastic character, such as the Chinese character etched onto the side and small strap handles flanking the opening.
