This 19th-century feng deng, or "square stool," is finely crafted of ironwood - a hardwood so-called because of its heft and naturally dark color. Masterfully constructed with mortise-and-tenon joinery methods, without the use of nails or screws, the stool features a floating panel top, straight round legs, and simple stretchers. The rounded corners of the top and stretchers imitate a strip of bamboo wrapped around the legs, an homage to early Chinese bent bamboo furniture designs. Minimally decorated, the stool has a simple, timeless form that fits effortlessly into any interior.
