In a traditional northern Chinese home, a chest like this would have been placed beside a raised platform called a kang, which was used as a sleeping and living area. The cabinet would have kept essential items close at hand in intimate spaces. The black lacquer finish has worn beautifully to create a smooth, yet visually textured surface. The broad top surface and straight legs contrast the delicately carved spandrels and apron for a balanced silhouette. In the modern home, the cabinet pairs beautifully with low furniture as a nightstand or end table.
