A fantastic example of contemporary folk art, this spiral-form basket is attributed to American artists Fran and Neil Prince, who created sculptural works throughout the late 20th-century and specialized in working with fallen Torrey Pine needles. Their distinct basketry technique takes after traditional longleaf pine needle baskets created by indigenous groups such as the Cherokee, Coushatta, and Choctaw peoples. Responding to the natural materials, the artists used the color gradation of each needle cluster to create alternating light and dark stripes that spiral down the basket. With a versatile minimalist form, this decorative basket takes pride of place on any surface.
