This early 20th century figurine is hand-carved of bone to depict an Indian soldier holding a musket rifle. Modeled after Sowar cavalrymen who served under the British East India Company, the petite figure is dressed in long robes painted with deep red colors and accented with gold pigments. The charming figurine was likely originally a part of a bone chess set or a set of collectible toy soldiers.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
