The Nupe people of Nigeria were known as some of the finest ceramicists in Africa. Everyday objects, like this storage vessel, received detailed attention. Likely used to hold grain and other dry foods, the vessel's varied textures come from its practical design. The dimples and bands were engraved on the vessel's surface to provide a better grip, creating a rich surface texture that has become hand-worn over time. The sculptural vessels were traditionally stacked along the inside walls of the home, which likely accounts for the damage along the vessel's rim.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
