This Chinese courtyard stool dates to the mid-19th century and has a classic splayed leg design with round legs and a rectangular seat. The stool is crafted of northern elmwood (yumu) using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, plus the added support of the occasional nail. The seat is formed from a solid plank of elm with ridged sides and smoothed top surface burnished from years of use. The splayed legs are reinforced with straight stretchers and topped by a simply carved apron on each side. The rustic stool is brushed with a thin layer of brown lacquer, now richly aged and crackled in some areas for a crazed texture.

Missing a portion of the apron on one side.
