This small terracotta vessel is a beautiful example of provincial Chinese ceramics. The vase is sculpted in the ancient hu form, a shape defined by its wide shoulders, narrow neck, and flared lip. Over time, the Hu vase form evolved into the modern lidded vessel known as a baluster jar or ginger jar.

The vase is etched with scrollwork resembling archaistic dragons and flanked with faux handles in the shape of mythical fu lions. The exterior is finished with a light brown glaze, wonderfully textured with drip marks and firing imperfections.

Minor chips to rim.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
