Crafted in the early 20th century, this tall cabinet has a clean-lined form designed with straight sides and square corners. The cabinet is cloaked in a glossy black lacquer finish, contrasted by hand-painted gilt decoration, now considerably faded from years of use. The cabinet features two double doors secured with brass lock plates and decorated with whimsical round medallions of various motifs and auspicious symbols.

Among the painted symbols are flower blossoms of the four seasons, idyllic ‘shan shui’ landscapes, and butterflies and cicadas for happiness. Painted on the lower panel are three large medallions of leafy branches bearing pomegranates, peaches, and citrons, symbols known as The Three Abundances of good fortune, longevity and many sons. A storied addition to the modern home, the cabinet offers ample storage with three shelves, two shallow drawers, and a deep lower compartment. The lacquer finish has aged beautifully with time, developing fantastic crackle and character from years of use.

Brass hardware is replacement.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
